Kids report their TravelSmart programs

At the Launch of the Millennium Kids Corner on Hype FM in March 2009 Students from South Perth Primary School and Curtin Primary School presented the benefits of young people having a voice in their community.  Exemplifying their successful TravelSmart school programs, the students outlined the benefits of using youth radio to get the 'TravelSmart to School' message out to the community.  Over the following weeks students from Wesley College, St Hilda's Anglican School for Girls and Scotch College had the opportunity to talk about their school TravelSmart initiatives. The MK Corner hosts also interviewed dietitian Ruth Dumont about the benefits of a healthy diet and lifestyle for study.

Incentive Trial Data!

20 Schools participated in the TravelSmart EatSmart Incentive Trial. From Kalgoorlie to Bullsbrook and right down to Albany young people tried to reduce their greenhouse consumption by walking, riding and catching public transport to school.

Schools who participated teamed their TravelSmart Day with an EatSmart Morning tea thanks to the Millennium Kids EatSmart Grants.

Schools like Dunsborough Primary School incorporated the collecting of the TravelSmart EatSmart data into their Mathematics lessons and submitted a specially designed table of data to Millennium Kids.

Other schools like Calista Primary School had over 200 kids participate!!

Goldfields says Air is Biggest Concern

On Wednesday 18th November 2009 students in the City of Kalgoorlie-Boulder put their concerns into action during a TravelSmart EatSmart Workshop.

The students took part in a waste-free EatSmart Morning Teato learn about healthy eating and how it should be incorporated to their every day diet.

The kids used fruit to create a tasty fruit kebab. As a whole group students to highlighted the importance of eating fruit and vegetables.

To combat their concerns for Air Pollution students will also be taking part in a TravelSmart Survey to get a snapshot of school travel habits in in the Goldfields.

Kalgoorlie-Boulder gets set to TravelSmart Eat Smart in Term 4!

Students from the City of Kalgoorlie-Boulder will be taking part in TravelSmart EatSmart in Term 4 when the Millennium Kids Sustainability Roadshow returns to the Goldfields.

The Millennium Kids ran an initial Sustainability Roadshow in the City of Kalgoorlie-Boulder on Wednesday 19th July 2009 with over 40 student’s exploring what sustainability meant through a series of inter-related activities. The result was the development the Big Switch Experiment Map of Change.

The Big Switch Experiment Map of Change describes the problems and threats within each sustainability area, as well as practical actions to make change with ideas from the students to develop a practical project.

The sustainability areas of ‘air’ and ‘energy’ were the identified as the greatest concerns and participating schools were given the opportunity to take part in TravelSmart EatSmart program.

TravelSmart EatSmart will allow students to create a campaign that encourages kids to walk, ride or catch public transport to school in an effort to reduce greenhouse gas emissions, increase physical activity and promote healthy eating.

There are range of benefits to schools participating in the TravelSmart EatSmart program, which covers a number of curriculum areas including English, IT, Society and Environment, Music, Maths and Health. The program also increases the health and wellbeing of students and can significantly decrease number of cars in and around the school area during peak times.

Scotch College Goes Green

William Robertson, Year 5 student, from Scotch College Junior School had a burning question:

“If cars of all sizes were taken off the roads for one whole week and public transport and bikes etc, were only forms of transport would we produce less greenhouse gases?”

Concerned about sustainability issues and how our lifestyle choices and increased car use was affecting our environment William decided to organize an Scotch College “Green Day.”

“My action was to organize a Scotch “Green Day” which would help the students to realize the crisis were in and to start making a difference now before to late, said Will”

Here are some findings from his report.

“We can reduce greenhouse gases in transportation, if we take public transport. Travelling by public transport uses less energy and produces less Co2 emissions. Taking public transport to work saves 2177kgs of Co2 emissions a year and 63kgs a week. Rather than the average cars they produce 86.5 kgs of emissions a week and small cars produce 5.76 kgs of emissions a week. So if more and more people start taking public transport we would start decreasing our rate of greenhouse gases going into the atmosphere, and help sustainability for the future.”

“There are many alternatives just than public transport. Some are walking and riding your bike. These forms obviously produce no emissions at all and reduce the hassle of public transport. There are many benefits of these forms of transport- like exercise and getting some fresh air in the morning. If people come to terms with all these alternatives we will make a great big difference.”

William will be presenting his findings to Millennium Kids as part of the TravelSmart EatSmart initiative. He will be interviewed on HYPE 101.7fm to tell his story to the wider community.

The World Is IN our HANDS!

Students from Vasse PS and Dunsborough PS took part in the TravelSmart EatSmart program to have a say about their world. Students had great ideas about how they could help make their world a better place. Ideas included planting more trees, recycling,starting wormfarms and walking and riding to school.

Students looked at how we used resources and ways young people could make practical action change.

The students will run a campaign back at their school so watch the blog for more information.
